Emotional strength is defined as 'the ability to respond in an open and vulnerable way in the face of intense emotional experiences, feeling one's way deeper into the emotion which allows access to implicit functional processes driving action.'

In other words, it means tolerating stress in a way that allows you to remain productive and focused on your goals without buckling under emotional pressure.

Here are 7 traits that these people commonly possess:

  1. They have a high stress tolerance.

As mentioned above, this is the most crucial of all traits. Your ability to perform well in a stressful environment is a superpower. An example we all face is usually in our working environment, where we have to complete tasks under specific deadlines or deal with people who push our limits.

2. Indifference to the opinions of others.

This trait also reflects high self-esteem. By "indifferent," I want to emphasize that you are not overly sensitive to criticism and do not take things personally. You understand other people's perspectives, but that does not mean you take things personally, especially when criticized by people who do not know you fully or have a complete understanding of the situation.

3. Adaptable to changes.

Being flexible and open to change requires mental effort, and it is a crucial trait for everyone. Your ability to adapt quickly and successfully to changes is crucial in every aspect of your life.

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change." — Charles Darwin

4. They have principles and core values.

People with strong values are highly trustworthy since they remain steadfast in their beliefs. They are not prone to disregard them, which demonstrates integrity and radiates self-respect. They know what they stand for and are sure of themselves, staying stable and firm in their word. They will not lie to you, cheat on you, or be venal.

5. They take accountability for their actions.

On every occasion where something valuable is at stake, they take full responsibility for the outcome. They will not blame anyone else for a negative outcome other than themselves. This mindset leads to more self-criticism and, as a result, they develop a growth-oriented attitude towards life.

6. Self-control and emotional control.

Having emotional control means acknowledging their emotions and not acting without careful consideration. They intentionally create space between their emotions and actions, knowing that they will calm down later and gain a different perspective on the circumstances. This is of paramount importance since we deal with other people in our everyday lives, and it is essential to maintain healthy communication. Even when we disagree with others or feel offended by something that has been said, it is crucial to remain calm and collected. Doing so improves our relationships with friends, colleagues, and family and contributes to a more functional and civilized society.

7. Ability to stay focused.

Last but not least, mentally strong individuals have the ability to stay engaged in a task for long periods of time. This ability can be cultivated through practice and the habit of maintaining focus on a task. It also requires resisting internal and external triggers that cause distractions. This is a skill possessed at a high level by high achievers.
