ROBOTS
Having seen technology expand, I have often asked myself this question:
Can robots replace people?
It is an interesting argument which is both thrilling and scary.
However, I think there are some things that a robot can never do being a human.
The most important thing to talk about first and foremost is feeling.
Yes, they can program robots to imitate emotions but do those machines know what it means to feel?
Feeling is our unique feature as humans because it enables us to identify with others. We experience happiness or sorrow as though it were ours. Even when the advancements in these devices become more complex than ever before, still they will lack genuine human connection.
Then comes creativity.
This cannot be left unmentioned either. Humans have an inbuilt capacity for thinking outside the box so that they can come up with new ideas or solutions when faced with complicated problems.
Robots only analyze data and perform tasks according to already set algorithms hence lacking originality which stems from creative thinking ability.
Whether one writes a poem, composes music lyrics or paints pictures like Mona Lisa; such acts of making something out of nothingness represent artistic expression not found among mechanical beings.
Another important point is flexibility.
Humans are an extremely flexible species. We're able to acquire fresh abilities, find our way around uncharted territory and change as the situation changes too.
In contrast, robots follow certain rules given by their programmers while performing these functions only; otherwise, they make mistakes or break down entirely.
Amid perpetual shifts in reality, adaptability is paramount which artificial intelligence lacks in every sense.
As well, we should also consider intuition.
It may be called a hunch or sixth sense but people have an extraordinary capacity for making decisions on the basis of instinct and intuition rather than logic alone — this is what enables us to navigate through life's complex situations where reason falls short sometimes.
While decision-making in machines relies upon data as well as algorithms that are deprived of any understanding beyond what has already happened.
But I do not want to say that there is no place for robots in society because this would be untrue; repetitive tasks can be done with great accuracy by them; they may assist during dangerous moments and help us realize things that seemed impossible previously too. However, it should never replace those qualities which truly distinguish us as humans such as feelings, creativity adaptivity or even having a gut feeling about something — none of these can be generated artificially by machine intelligence.
So, can robots replace humans?
In some ways, yes. But in some ways that matter most to humans, I believe my answer will always be no. As long as we hold onto those uniquely human qualities, we'll continue to thrive in a world that's increasingly driven by technology.
