Sure, those serverless tools seem seductively easy at first. A few clicks, some magic configuration, and boom, your function works. But the moment you start relying on those convenient AWS-specific features — advanced triggers, seamless integrations, managed databases — you've handcuffed yourself.

Want to switch cloud providers or bring some functions in-house? Prepare for a rewrite so painful it'll make you question your life choices. That "open" Serverless Framework doesn't magically shield you from the underlying lock-in. Suddenly, the promise of cloud portability goes up in smoke, and you're stuck paying whatever AWS decides to charge.

Debugging? Prepare for Pain

The nostalgia will get you. Remember back in the days when you could track down a bug with some well-placed print statements and your trusty debugger? Well, those days are gone, baby. When your Lambda function explodes in the bowels of AWS, you're in for a special kind of hell.

Cloud logs are an endless maze of timestamps, cryptic error codes, and data that may or may not be relevant to your problem. Trying to piece together what happened feels like solving a murder mystery with half the clues redacted.

Forget about replicating the exact production environment locally — the sheer number of moving parts and hidden dependencies AWS throws in makes it virtually impossible. You'll spend hours trying to jerry-rig testing setups that barely approximate reality, wondering if it's even worth the effort. So much for the promise of easy, focused development.

Cold Starts are a Real Buzzkill

You think delivering a snappy user experience is a priority? Think again. That first time a Lambda function gets invoked after being idle? Prepare for your users to stare at a loading spinner while your function wakes from its slumber. Want to know what kills product adoption faster than a bad UI? Unbearably slow response times.

Sure, there are ways to mitigate cold starts — keeping your functions warm with constant pings, provisioned concurrency, all that jazz. But now you're right back to the kind of capacity planning and optimization you thought serverless would save you from. So much for the promise of "just focusing on your code."

"Pay Per Use" Can Get Spendy

The "pay per use" model sounds so enticing at first. No upfront costs, only pay for what you actually use! Those seemingly insignificant per-invocation charges add up surprisingly fast, especially at scale.

You think you're getting a bargain, until one function gets unexpectedly popular, a loop goes a little haywire, or a third-party integration starts spewing events, and suddenly your AWS bill gives you a minor heart attack. Turns out, "pay per use" is just a clever way of disguising unpredictable costs.

Don't get me wrong, for projects with sporadic usage or prototyping, serverless can be cost-effective. But the moment you have sustained traffic or complex workloads, those "cheap" invocations start to eat away at your budget. Before you go all-in, do some serious cost modeling and figure out where the break-even point is compared to more traditional hosting solutions.

When Simple Ain't So Simple

The whole allure of serverless is the promise of simplicity, right? You write a tiny function, hook it up to an event, and magic! But the moment you need anything vaguely resembling real-world application logic, prepare for the rabbit hole to get a whole lot deeper.

Suddenly, you're not just writing a function anymore. You're an architect, juggling a Frankensteinian assemblage of cloud services. Need to store data? DynamoDB it is — with its own unique quirks and pricing model to learn. Orchestrating multiple steps? Welcome to the wild world of Step Functions. External dependencies? Hope you like wrestling with IAM permissions.

That "simple" function morphs into a distributed system, with all the accompanying complexities. You find yourself spending more time configuring AWS services and piecing together event flows than actually writing business logic.

Don't get me wrong, serverless has its place. It's brilliant for certain use cases — event-driven tasks, bursty workloads, quick prototypes. But let's stop pretending it absolves us from understanding how systems work at a fundamental level.

I still use AWS heavily, but with a healthy dose of skepticism. Serverless is a tool like any other, not a magical solution to all your problems. The sooner we ditch the hype and focus on using it strategically, the better off we'll be.
